The Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival has made history by becoming Hungary’s first Oscar-qualifying festival, a significant achievement for Hungarian filmmakers and the country’s cinema scene.
As of this year, films that win in the Best Hungarian Live-Action Short Film and Best Hungarian Animated Short Film categories will automatically be eligible for submission to the prestigious Academy Awards.
This recognition, granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, puts Friss Hús in the same league as world-renowned film festivals like Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, as well as prominent short film events like Vienna Shorts and Tokyo ShortShorts.
Deák Dániel, the founder and director of Friss Hús, expressed his excitement: “The Academy’s decision marks the most significant milestone in Friss Hús’ history. As an Oscar-qualifying festival, we can draw even more international attention to Hungarian films and help promote emerging talent.”
Friss Hús has grown into Hungary’s largest short film festival since its inception in 2013, drawing over 10,000 visitors annually. The festival’s program showcases fresh, creative works from up-and-coming filmmakers, including notable past selections like Kristóf Deák’s Oscar-winning “Mindenki“ and Buda Flóra Anna’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning animated short “27”.
The 13th edition of Friss Hús will take place from May 29 to June 4, 2025, at the Puskin Cinema in Budapest. With submissions open until October 30, anticipation is high for what promises to be another landmark year for both the festival and Hungarian cinema.
