The best Hungarian films ever

Hungarian cinema is 120 years old, so to speak, not so young. During these 120 years, and „the” ones have already been overthrown in every way – so now, we have collected them. Here we go from top to bottom.

Made in Hungary – Mars (2016)

The second season of the series Mars (2016) was made almost entirely in Hungary, so it is not that surprising, that many Hungarian experts worked on it. That includes actors from Hungary, and a Hungarian in one of the most important positions in the series, Attila Szalay, who was the lead cinematographer of all the episodes.

Made in Hungary – Inferno

Inferno (2016) is the third and final installment in the Robert Langdon film series. Starring Tom Hanks, reprising his role as Langdon, alongside Felicity Jones as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ben Foster, and Iffran Khan. Even though not the whole movie, but the majority of it was shot in Budapest, and many beautiful interior and exterior shots came out in the end. In some cases, viewers with sharp eyes are the ones who can notice the Budapest locations, but some are pretty obvious for the Hungarian eye.

Made in Hungary – Terminator: Dark Fate

The sixth installment of The Terminator film franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) is an American science fiction action film directed by Tim Miller and written by David Goyer and Billy Ray from a story by James Cameron, Charles Eglee, and Josh Friedman. Starring Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800 Terminator, respectively, reuniting the actors after 28 years.

Made in Hungary – Spy

Being a spy is being like a shadow. Quick, untraceable, unnoticeable. A true professional, who has charm, who is purposeful, and elegant. Not in the movie Spy (2015) which is an American action-comedy spy film written and directed by Paul Feig. Starring Melissa McCarthy as Susan Cooper, the main character is the absolute opposite of what has been said above. The journey of Susan is truly a tale, and the best about it is that the majority of it happens in Hungary. Almost the whole movie has been shot in the capital city, Budapest.

Made in Hungary – Radioactive

The biographical drama film called, (directed by Marjane Satrapi, starring Rosamund Pike) Radioactive (2019) is about Marie and her life. The movie was filmed in Hungary, especially in Budapest and Esztergom.

Made in Hungary – Colette

Not a lot of Hungarians can remember when did they not run into Henry Cavill or Will Smith on the street, but Keira Knightley. Her film Colette (2018) was almost completely shot in Budapest, and the city acts wonderfully as Paris at the end of the 19th century.

Made in Hungary – Spectral

Netflix’s Original movie, Spectral (2016) was supposed to come out in theatres originally, but the production company behind it somehow just left. That’s when Netflix came in, made a deal, and bought the rights to the movie. Even though in the plot, the story takes place in Chișinău, Moldova, the majority of the production was filmed in Budapest. The film was released on December 9, 2016.
