The 20th edition of the Verzió Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, set to take place from November 22nd to 29th, is poised to offer a compelling cinematic journey. Spanning over 40 countries with more than 80 films, the festival aims to probe deep into societal, environmental, and identity issues.
For two decades, Verzió has been a platform where international and Hungarian documentary films converge to explore human dignity and common social issues. The festival’s lineup this year is incredibly diverse, promising to take viewers on a virtual journey around the world.
Spotlight on Diverse and Thought-Provoking Films
From intimate narratives to global concerns, Verzió 20’s film selection is vast and varied. Highlights include “Fairy Garden” by Gergő Somogyvári, an intimate portrayal of unconventional family dynamics, and “We Will Not Fade Away” by Alisa Kovalenko, a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the Donetsk Basin. “Hollywoodgate” by Ibrahim Nash‘at offers a daring perspective on the Taliban’s transformation in Afghanistan.
Engaging with Global and Domestic Human Rights Issues
The festival’s films not only engage with pressing international issues but also shine a light on domestic concerns. This year’s selections cover topics ranging from intersex identity struggles in “Who I Am Not” by Tünde Skovrán to the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining in “Deep Rising.”
Interactive and Educational Programs
Verzió 20 isn’t just about film screenings. The festival includes professional programs like the Young Critics Workshop and the DocLab Story Development and Editing Workshop, offering opportunities for emerging filmmakers and critics. Additionally, free-of-charge programs and retrospective screenings will be available, requiring registration.
Celebrating Budapest’s Cinematic Heritage
In a special tribute to Budapest on its 150th anniversary of unification, the “Budapest: Faces and Places” section will feature documentaries from the last fifty years, offering insights into the city’s past and present.
Meeting Renowned Filmmakers
The festival provides a unique opportunity for audiences to meet and interact with filmmakers. Alisa Kovalenko, Pascale Bourgaux, and Peter Nestler are among the notable directors who will be present, offering insights into their works and the creative process behind them.
Where and When?
The Verzió 20 Human Rights Documentary Film Festival will be held at Toldi and Corvin Cinemas in Budapest, and various other locations across Hungary. For those who can’t attend in person, the online film archive Verziotheque will be open from November 30th to December 10th.
