The long-awaited feature adaptation of David E. Hoffman’s acclaimed nonfiction book The Billion Dollar Spy is finally underway, with Russell Crowe leading a cast that includes Harry Lawtey, Willa Fitzgerald, Tony Goldwyn, Rufus Sewell, and Justin Theroux. The film tells the story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet radar engineer who passed classified military intelligence to the CIA during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Between 1978 and 1985, Tolkachev handed over information that reportedly saved the United States an estimated $2 billion in defense R&D, including insights into the Soviet Union’s missile systems, fighter jets, and radar technology. Initially motivated by a personal vendetta and growing disillusionment with the regime, Tolkachev approached a CIA officer at a Moscow gas station in 1978—an act that led to one of the most significant espionage operations of the Cold War.
Though reluctant at first, CIA Moscow Station Chief Gardner Hathaway recruited Tolkachev, who famously rejected high payments, instead asking for Western music, art supplies for his son, and a cyanide pill for himself. Over two dozen meetings, he delivered detailed intelligence on Soviet systems including the MiG-29, Su-27, and S-300, while defying standard CIA operational protocol to reduce the risk of discovery.
Eventually, Tolkachev was caught by the KGB, possibly exposed by CIA mole Aldrich Ames, though other sources point to Edward Lee Howard. Tolkachev was arrested in 1985, tried, and executed in 1986, leaving behind a legacy commemorated by a portrait in the CIA headquarters.
Production on The Billion Dollar Spy is taking place in Hungary, continuing the country’s growing role as a hub for international prestige projects. With its Cold War settings and historical scope, Hungary provides both visual authenticity and production infrastructure for recreating Soviet-era Moscow.
There is no confirmed release date yet, but with filming now active, The Billion Dollar Spy is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated historical thrillers of the coming year.
