The Alien franchise’s revival continues as a sequel to Alien: Romulus is officially in development, following the compelling story of Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) after their harrowing encounter with a deadly Xenomorph hybrid.
20th Century Studios recently confirmed that the next film will expand on Romulus’s themes, taking the characters on an uncertain journey to the enigmatic planet Yvaga, a location hinted to be far from a paradise.
Director Fede Alvarez, who brought a fresh tension-filled vision to the franchise, is expected to return, though his official involvement is still pending. 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell shared that the studio is keen to see how Alvarez will develop Rain and Andy’s characters, whose resilience and complexity captured audience attention in Romulus. With a unique approach to horror and science fiction, Alvarez aims to delve deeper into the Alien universe, exploring Yvaga’s secrets and testing the survivors’ limits.
The production of Romulus took place at Budapest’s Origo Studios, enhancing the film’s atmospheric tension and futuristic aesthetics. Although location details for the sequel remain unconfirmed, there’s speculation that Origo Studios might host filming once again, adding continuity and familiarity to the unfolding saga. Fans of the Alien universe can anticipate fresh horrors and high-stakes survival, though the sequel may not arrive until around 2027 due to early-stage planning and production timelines.
The success of Romulus at the box office and its positive reception among critics signals a reinvigorated franchise that holds vast potential for new storylines.
