The Alien franchise continues to evolve, with producer Michael Pruss sharing updates on a potential follow-up to Alien: Romulus.
In an interview with ScreenRant at the Saturn Awards, Pruss revealed that while a sequel is being discussed, it may not serve as a direct continuation of “Romulus”. Instead, it could take the form of another standalone entry in the franchise, much like “Alien: Covenant” followed “Prometheus”.
Pruss clarified:
“I am involved in the sequel with Ridley and our friends and colleagues and Fede, of course. We are working on ideas for another Alien film, which may not be a direct sequel to Romulus, but it certainly is a part of the existing franchise.”
This statement suggests that the next film will expand the Alien universe rather than pick up directly from where “Romulus” left off. Using the comparison to “Prometheus” and “Covenant”, it’s likely that fans can expect the new movie to explore fresh characters and narratives while remaining tied to the overarching mythology of the series.
Pruss also addressed the timeline for the sequel’s development:
“We are in an early phase, but we hope to really have something special to talk about as the year goes on. I promise it won’t be 25 years; it’ll be sooner than that, but I don’t have more specifics. We aren’t yet in more of a specific phase than just working with Fede and Ridley to try and come up with something great that will frankly garner the same reaction. “Romulus” was worth the wait, right? People loved it, they embraced it, and so it takes time to do it. But we want to give you something great.”
While it’s reassuring that fans won’t have to wait decades, the creative team is prioritizing quality and thoughtful planning over rushing into production. This careful approach has been a hallmark of the Alien franchise, and it’s one that has served it well in maintaining its standing as one of the most iconic sci-fi horror series.
Rumors surrounding the sequel have included speculation about Sigourney Weaver’s involvement and the use of digital de-aging technology, though these remain unconfirmed. Additionally, director Fede Álvarez has acknowledged areas for improvement in “Romulus” and is reportedly keen to refine elements for the sequel, building on leftover storylines and the new creatures introduced in the first film. Concept art for these creatures has already generated excitement among fans.
Filming for “Alien: Romulus” took place at Origo Studios in Budapest, a growing hub for major productions, and the city may once again play host to the franchise’s next chapter. For now, the timeline and plot details for the sequel remain under wraps. However, Pruss’ comments suggest a commitment to delivering a worthy addition to the Alien saga, ensuring fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
