Mirjána Balogh’s Wish You Were Ear has won the Crystal Bear for Best Short Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The film, created at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) Animation program with the support of the National Film Institute (NFI), competed in the Generation 14+ category.
The 11-minute animated short is set in a world where couples must exchange a body part after breaking up. This concept explores how relationships shape personal identity, both physically and emotionally. “In my film, I wanted to capture how we can – or cannot – accept the changes caused by past relationships after they end and how these changes become part of our self-image,” said Mirjána Balogh.
The film was produced at MOME with the collaboration of current and former students. Its sound design was crafted by József Iszlai, edited by Judit Czakó, and produced by József Fülöp. Distribution and festival submissions are managed by MOME Film Knowledge Center in cooperation with NFI.
Berlinale’s Generation section highlights films that resonate with young audiences through narrative and cinematic language. Since 2017, MOME Animation graduation films have been regularly selected for competition at the festival, joining the ranks of earlier works such as Réka Bucsi’s “Symphony No. 42” (2012) and Flóra Anna Buda’s “Entropia” (2019).
In 2023, MOME Animation entered a new chapter, transitioning to an international curriculum taught in English, now offering specializations in game design and immersive storytelling alongside film directing.
