Hungary has officially selected the historical drama “Semmelweis,” directed by Lajos Koltai, as its contender for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film centers on the life of Ignác Semmelweis, the pioneering Hungarian doctor renowned for discovering the importance of hand hygiene in preventing infections, earning him the title of the “savior of mothers.”
“Semmelweis” has received acclaim for its compelling portrayal of the doctor’s battle against skepticism in 19th-century Vienna. The film features standout performances by Miklós H. Vecsei in the title role, alongside Katica Nagy, bringing to life the struggles and triumphs of Semmelweis’s mission to save lives.
