Hulu’s upcoming series about Amanda Knox, tentatively titled Blue Moon, is facing backlash in Perugia, Italy, where filming recently began—seventeen years after the murder of Knox’s British roommate, Meredith Kercher. The show, which Knox is co-producing, has drawn strong reactions from locals, who have displayed banners around the city with messages such as “Rispetto per Meredith” (“Respect for Meredith”).
Perugia’s mayor, Vittoria Ferdinandi, acknowledged the public outcry, explaining in an open letter published in Italian newspapers that while the city could have denied filming permits, it allowed the project to proceed with the condition of carefully overseeing the content filmed on location.
The eight-part limited series, starring Grace Van Patten as Knox and Giuseppe De Domenico as Raffaele Sollecito, recounts Knox’s wrongful conviction and ultimate acquittal by Italy’s highest court in 2015. The show has been produced across multiple locations, including Italy, Hungary, and Canada, under the guidance of creator K.J. Steinberg and a production team that includes Monica Lewinsky’s Alt Ending Productions and The Littlefield Company.
The controversy surrounding “Blue Moon” underscores the lingering tensions in Italy over Knox’s involvement in the Kercher case, despite her acquittal. Many locals and Kercher’s family still hold doubts about Knox’s role, which has fueled ongoing debate. The production’s choice to film in Perugia, particularly at locations significant to the original events, has amplified these sensitivities. While Hulu has not commented, the production team is reportedly working closely with local authorities to ensure that filming respects the memory of Meredith Kercher and the city’s sentiments.
