A few weeks ago, we were writing about Kevin Spacey’s appearance in the Hungarian-Mongolian-English co-production, “Gateway to the West”. It turns out that his past came back to haunt him.
Spacey is reportedly off the production, since on the 26th of May, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) charged the actor with sexual assault against three men in the UK. The producers of “Gateway to the West” almost immediately decided to part ways with the American actor before starting production.
The star already had a signed contract, but now director Péter Soós will have to deal with a replacement. As of now, there is no information yet on who the creators have in mind, but casting is certainly in progress.
Kevin Spacey was first accused of sexual assault back in 2017, which seemed like the end of his career. He is not welcome in Hollywood anymore, which made the news about his appearance in a European film even more surprising.
“Gateway to the West” will be a historical drama set in the 13th century, when Batu Khan, grandchild of the great Genghis Khan reached the walls of Esztergom, Hungary – a siege, that could have caused chaos in Europe. Spacey would have played an Italian cardinal, the main antagonist of the film.
All in all, no one could tell what’s next for Kevin Spacey, but “Gateway to the West” is ready to shoot, and the studios cannot wait for his case to come to a conclusion.
