Eddie Redmayne’s latest role as a master of disguise in The Day of the Jackal has already garnered strong reviews, with critics and audiences praising the gritty and immersive portrayal of Frederick Forsyth’s iconic assassin.
The series has drawn attention not only for Redmayne’s compelling performance but also for its evocative European settings, filmed extensively in Hungary. This location choice has been noted as a key factor in grounding the globe-trotting thriller in real, atmospheric landscapes that lend the adaptation a raw and tangible authenticity.
Known for transforming himself in films like “The Theory of Everything” and “Fantastic Beasts”, Redmayne’s portrayal of the Jackal required extensive prosthetic work for a variety of disguises, including a memorable appearance as an elderly German cleaner. This particular transformation required four hours in the makeup chair, overseen by makeup designer Melanie Lenihan and prosthetics designer Richard Martin.
The foam suit used to bulk up Redmayne’s frame added to the intense physical demands of the role, especially on a hot day in Hungary with no air-conditioning in the studio. Redmayne humorously recalled how the heat impacted his experience: “My overwhelming memory of those days was Richard coming and doing pinpricks through the prosthetic, and this sweat oozing out the top.”
The series has received widespread praise for balancing a modern feel with the analog intensity of Forsyth’s 1971 novel. Redmayne, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Lashana Lynch, has been vocal about his commitment to honoring the original story’s meticulous pacing and complex character dynamics. He recently shared how he was captivated by the script’s detail: “I loved the meticulousness with which [the Jackal] prepares,” he noted. This attention to the Jackal’s strategy and depth adds a layer of realism that has resonated with audiences.
The global appeal of “The Day of the Jackal” is evident, with NBC Universal Global TV Distribution securing deals for the series in nearly 200 territories, including major markets like Australia, Canada, France, and Japan. The extensive distribution reflects not only the strength of Redmayne’s performance but also the high production quality delivered by Carnival Films and Universal International Studios.
