August is set to bring around a lineup of highly anticipated movie releases. From the return of beloved heroes to the adrenaline-fueled world of racing, there’s something for everyone.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem – 2 Aug (Theatrical)
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in action in “TMNT: Mutant Mayhem”, directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears. The film, which serves as a reboot of the series, stars the voices of Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the titular team, with a great ensemble cast making up the rest of the voices with stars ranging from John Cena to Jackie Chan. The film, written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Jeff Rowe, follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.
Gran Turismo – 11 Aug (Theatrical)
Sure to please both gamers and petrolheads, “Gran Turismo” is set to race into the the cinemas this month. Based on the popular video game franchise, this film, shot in Budapest last year, follows the journey of a poor but immensely talented gamer (Archie Madekwe), a failed former racer (David Harbour) and an idealistic motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom) as they risk it all to take on the elite world of professional racing. The movie, directed by Neill Blomkamp, is scheduled to begin a limited theatrical release in the United States on 11 August before a wide release on 25 August by Sony Pictures Releasing.
Blue Beetle – 18 Aug (Theatrical)
With “Blue Beetle”, DC Comics is set to introduce its first cinematic Latino superhero. In the movie, an alien relic chooses Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the teenager with a suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, turning his life upside down as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle. The 14th instalment of the DC Extended Universe is directed by Angel Manuel Soto and stars the likes of Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo and Susan Sarandon.
Ahsoka – Aug 23 (Disney+)
Star Wars fans will also have a reason to rejoice in August as the highly anticipated “Ahsoka” limited series makes its debut on Disney+. Set in the galaxy far, far away, the live-action series follows the adventures of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), a former Jedi Padawan, making her way through a post-Empire world. Ahsoka, directed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, is scheduled to premiere on August 23 with two episodes, and will consist of a total of eight episodes, with the last release coming in October.
