At a press conference held at the prestigious ORIGO Studios, the Hungarian Hollywood Council and ORIGO Film Group Zrt. have unveiled a unique map that pays homage to the Hungarian roots of iconic Hollywood figures. This initiative marks a significant moment, highlighting the profound connections between Hungary and the American film industry.
The map is not just a geographical representation; it showcases towns and villages that are the birthplaces of individuals who have contributed to the foundations and the contemporary fame of Hollywood.
The unveiling ceremony was not only a celebration of these illustrious connections but also an event that brought together distinguished guests from the film industry and local governance. Among the attendees were Márta Fekszi, CEO of Origo Studios, and Balázs Bokor, President of the Hungarian Hollywood Council, and Zsófia Nagy-Vargha, Deputy Secretary of State.
“This gathering is perhaps the best example for the connections between Hungary and Hollywood can really unite us, since most settlements feel a sense of mission towards caring for this unique heritage. And it’s a wonderful thingbecause we should rightfully be proud of these great people.” said Balázs Bokor.
The map features names and places associated with legends such as Adolf Zukor, founder of Paramount Pictures, who hails from Mátészalka, and actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Dean Norris, who possess Hungarian heritage.
During her address, Márta Fekszi reflected on the significance of ORIGO Studios within both the local and international film landscapes, and how Hungary became the European capital of filmmaking: “Back in the day, Hungarians went out to Hollywood, and now we’re saying that Hungarian filmmaking and Hungarian professionals have achieved so much in recent years that Hollywood is coming back to Hungary.”
This event is not just about celebrating the past; it’s about inspiring the future. By recognizing the Hungarian roots of Hollywood’s most influential figures, ORIGO Studios and the Hungarian Hollywood Council are fostering a sense of pride and continuity in Hungary’s contribution to the global entertainment industry. It serves as a reminder of the small nation’s outsized impact on the world stage, encouraging young Hungarians to dream big and pursue their ambitions in filmmaking and beyond.
Zsófia Nagy-Vargha, Deputy Secretary of State responsible for youth affairs, who presented the map crafted by József Tóth, emphasized the government’s support for the film industry, saying, “Since 2010, the government has paid special attention to the film industry. One of the pillars of this supportive environment is that Hungary offers one of the highesttax rebates for film production in the world. But just as essential is the wonderful infrastructure and the excellently trained crew available for both foreign and domestic productions.”
