The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has invited 398 new members. Notable invitees include Taylor Swift, Austin Butler, Ke Huy Quan, Keke Palmer, and NT Rama Rao Jr.
The 2023 class is diverse, comprising 40% women and 34% members from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities. Furthermore, 52% are from outside the U.S., representing 51 different countries and territories.
Many of the invitees have recently been Oscar nominees or winners, such as Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Ke Huy Quan (supporting actor for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. from “RRR”. Taylor Swift, despite previous snubs, is now set to join the music branch as she continues her global tour and prepares for her directorial debut.
The Academy also welcomed global artists and talents like Zar Amir-Ebrahimi, Raúl Castillo, Rosa Salazar, and Joseph Kosinski. Screenwriters Kazuo Ishiguro and Charlotte Wells, as well as key industry executives from companies like Netflix and Warner Bros-Discovery, have also been invited.
There is one Hungarian filmmaker among the invitees: Erzsébet Forgács, who will join the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists at the Academy. Forgács previously worked on “Son of Saul”, Hungary’s Oscar-winning international feature back in 2016.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang have expressed pride in welcoming these new members for their significant contributions to the cinematic arts and sciences. Four branches invited more women than men this year — casting directors, costume designers, makeup artists, and hairstylists, and marketing and public relations, with actors and directors from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities forming the majority of their candidates. Some invitees have been invited to multiple branches but can only select one upon accepting membership.
