One of the best Netflix Originals of 2019, Russian Doll, has been confirmed for a second season. The filming is currently underway in Budapest.
The Netflix original centers around Nadia (Lyonne), a hard-partying New Yorker whose 36th birthday turns fatal, throwing her into a “Groundhog Day”-like scenario in which she must die repeatedly to solve the mystery of what killed her in the first place.
Midway through the season, Nadia meets Alan (Charlie Barnett), who’s trapped in a similar loop. Together, the two of them form a time-bending odd couple trying to get unstuck, and the result was a wildly popular show that garnered a great deal of critical acclaim and Emmy nominations.
Originally, filming for the second “Russian Doll” was scheduled to begin on March 30th, 2020. New York was heavily impacted by the Coronavirus and as a result, all filming was postponed and/or canceled altogether. In February 2021, Production Weekly revealed that the second season is due to begin production on March 1st, 2021 with filming once again taking place in New York City.
Now, it looks like the production continues in Hungary, after Sorozatjunkie posted a picture of the preparations. The picture shows the preparation of the Astoria metro underpass, which is being transformed for the series. The signs in the subway have been changed to German, as the location will be transformed into East Berlin for the filming.
Netflix is aiming for a summer 2021 release date for Season 2. Late summer does seem feasible, considering the series began production in March 2021 and filming is still underway, as of June.
