“Second round. New suit. More action. #aquaman Aloha,” the actor wrote on Instagram, along with pictures of his suit from the first film and his new, sleek outfit for the sequel.
Momoa is reprising his role of Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, alongside a cast featuring Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the James Wan-directed film.
The first Aquaman, released in December 2018, grossed more than $1 billion, making it the only DC film to reach that marker other than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. Wan is producing alongside Peter Safran, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning to pen the script.
“Aquaman 2” director James Wan also posted the looks on his Instagram account, writing that the stealth suit is “Atlantean tech based on cephalopod’s camouflaging ability” and that he and screenwriter David Leslie Johnson were inspired by Aquaman’s blue suit from the ’80s.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is scheduled for release on Dec. 16, 2022.
The DC sequel was pitched to Warner Bros. by star Momoa during the filming of the first movie, which was released in 2018. With the introduction of several underwater kingdoms in the first “Aquaman,” there is certainly plenty to be explored in a second film and possible other installments. As the highest-grossing film based on a DC Comics character, the sequel comes highly anticipated by fans and movie theater owners alike.
“Now, we have a character who’s more mature, who has more time to breathe. And we get to understand him and some of his values and some of his motives,” he said. “Hopefully in ‘Aquaman 2,’ we can present a more well-rounded version of David Kane.” Momoa’s next movie is the just-debuted Dune.
The movie made its premiere at Venice Film Festival and screened Out of Competition on Friday, September 3rd. The sci-fi interior scenes were shot in Hungary at ORIGO Studios.
