Nóra Lakos’ heartwarming family film, I Accidentally Wrote a Book, is making its mark as the first Hungarian family film to compete at prestigious A-list festivals.

The film will have its world premiere at the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam, one of the world’s most renowned festivals for children’s and youth films, on October 29. Shortly after, it will debut internationally at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, competing in the Just Film Youth and Children’s section, where young audiences are introduced to the world through cinematic storytelling.

Produced in collaboration with JUNO11 Pictures and the Dutch company BIND, the film was made with support from the National Film Institute, Nederlands Filmfonds, and Eurimages. The touching narrative, inspired by Annet Huizing’s acclaimed novel How I Accidentally Wrote a Book, follows Nina, a young girl who aspires to be a writer. Played by Villő Demeter, Nina navigates her family’s challenges after the loss of her mother, while a quirky group of characters – including her bumbling magician brother and her eccentric writer neighbor – help her discover love, family, and creativity along the way.

The film boasts a stellar cast, including László Mátray, Kati Zsurzs, and Vivien Rujder, and features a unique visual style that blends live-action with animations reflecting Nina’s creative mind. With a script full of humor and heartfelt moments, I “Accidentally Wrote a Book” stands out as a refreshing, family-friendly film. The project’s exceptional design team, led by production designer Juci Szurdi and costume designer Fruzsina Lányi, contributed to the film’s imaginative, whimsical look, which adds to the emotional depth of the story.

Following its festival appearances, the film will hit Hungarian theaters on January 16, 2025, distributed by JUNO11 Distribution and the Human Rights and Cultural Foundation. Audiences will get a sneak preview during winter holiday screenings, giving families a chance to enjoy this feel-good film ahead of its full release.
