In recent years, Hungary has solidified its position as a burgeoning center for the production of not only international films and series, but also commercials and music videos. This development is part of a broader trend that sees the country becoming an increasingly vital node in the global entertainment industry, extending beyond its well-established reputation in film production to encompass the fast-paced world of advertising and music.

A key driver behind Hungary‘s rise in this sector is the attractive 30% tax incentive provided by the government. This financial encouragement has made the country a magnet for international projects, offering significant cost savings without compromising on quality. However, as Hungary gained popularity in the market in the past few years, productions started to become more expensive. According to Szabolcs Mórádi, producer at Cabbage Film Factory, the rising prices will not scare potential partners in the future:

“The fact that we are becoming more expensive is not a danger to incoming international productions, since this just means that our professionals standards are rising. Sure, there are somewhat cheaper alternatives in the region, but that’s rarely the only aspect that matters to foreign producers when looking for the ideal location for a project,” explained Mórádi, adding that Hungary is still standing out even among slightly cheaper neighboring countries like Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania, where tax incentives exist on paper, but are not effectively implemented.

The incentive is designed to support the creative industries and has been instrumental in fostering a competitive environment that benefits both local and international stakeholders. It’s worth mentioning, that while the tax incentives are applicable for music videos, commercials cannot qualify for a rebate.

A Talent Pool With Experienced Professionals

The success of Hungary in attracting commercial and music video productions can also be attributed to its pool of talented and experienced professionals. The country boasts a rich tradition in filmmaking, and this expertise has seamlessly transitioned into the realms of commercial and music video production. Hungarian professionals are renowned for their creativity, technical prowess, and ability to deliver high-quality content under tight deadlines. From directors and cinematographers to special effects artists and post-production specialists, Hungary offers a comprehensive roster of talent that can meet the diverse needs of international clients.

Naturally, the competitive race for international projects among Budapest‘s studios and agencies is fierce. Addressing the competitive market landscape, Mórádi reveals the intensity of the race for projects within Hungary:

“We are able to produce two big international projects in a month. Or even more, but unfortunately, this industry isn’t one where everyone can find a big commercial or music video every week with a 50-100 million (HUF) budget. The competition is huge, whether it’s domestic or foreign work. Even with Cabbage Film Factory being among the top 5-10 locally, we compete with the smallest, too. There used to be maybe 5 companies that used to make TV commercials, including us. Now, this 5 has become 50.”

As Hungary continues to develop its infrastructure and nurture its talent pool, the country is set to remain a key destination for international advertisers and music video producers. With its combination of financial incentives, skilled professionals, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality productions, Hungary is poised to maintain its position as a leading hub for commercial and music video production on the international stage.
