The filming of popular Netflix series Wednesday may move to Hungary after companies in Romania, where the first season was shot, allegedly “ripped the filmmakers off”, according to a report by IGN.
While Hungary is a popular filming location for big productions, “Wednesday” was shot near Bucharest and Brasov in the neighboring Romania. However, the creators are reportedly on the lookout for new shooting locations, with Hungary and Bulgaria topping the list of possible candidates.
According to the report, local companies in Romania have been overpricing the equipment Tim Burton’s team wants to rent. As an example, the makers of “Wednesday” were forced to rent cameras for USD 3,000 that would normally be rented for USD 300 per unit.
The possible change in shooting location would not be reflected in the plot of the next season, as filmmakers intend to keep Nevermore Academy and the nearby town of Jericho as the center of events.
The first school of Jenna Ortega‘s title character (from which she was expelled) was a building of the Technical University of Bucharest, and the swimming pool is located in the premises of the Dinamo Bucharest sports club. The Nevermore Academy is ‘modelled’ on the neo-Romanesque Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, south of Brasov, but also features the railway station in Sinaia, built in the 1800s for the Romanian King Charles I, who often visited the town.
While Tim Burton himself said that the locations in Romania suited the Addams Family universe very well, it remains to be seen whether shooting would stay in place or move to another nearby country after the reported friction with local companies.
Even though the first season was produced in Romania, “Wednesday” already has ties to Hungary, as the young version of the title character is played by a talented Hungarian child actress called Karina Váradi. According to her mother, she was hand-picked for the role by the series’ director after seeing Váradi’s application video, where she had to pretend being sad, and also play out a scene where she was furious because someone killed her spider.
