Eddie Redmayne has offered a brief but intriguing update on The Day of the Jackal season 2, the continuation of Sky and Peacock’s adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel. The first season — filmed in Budapest in 2023 — was well-received, and Redmayne’s performance as the elusive assassin earned him critical acclaim and award nominations. The show was renewed shortly after its November 2024 debut.
Describing the production as “an actor’s playground,” Redmayne praised the role for its variety — involving voice work, accents, stunts, and makeup — as well as its emotional depth. “It had everything. It was a very easy yes for me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
While Redmayne avoided giving concrete details about the plot of the second season, he confirmed he has already read some scripts. “I can literally say nothing [about season 2],” he said, “but I’m so excited to see if we can push it to another level.”
Season 1 left several major narrative threads open, particularly surrounding Redmayne’s Jackal character and his betrayal by Charles Dance’s financier character, Timothy Winthrop. With the assassin’s identity exposed and personal relationships fractured, the next chapter promises higher emotional and dramatic stakes.
Though filming dates for season 2 have not yet been announced, Redmayne’s comments suggest that development is actively progressing — potentially indicating a production start in the near future. Given the timeline of season 1’s shoot and release, a premiere window in late 2026 or early 2027 seems likely.
While it’s not yet confirmed whether Budapest will return as a location, the Hungarian capital served as a stand-in for various European settings in the first season — a factor that may influence the production’s return.
