Craig Mazin, lauded for his storytelling prowess in this year’s The Last of Us series, has added another impressive project to his repertoire – ‘Dune: Part Two’. Having co-created the hit HBO series with original game creator Neil Druckmann, Mazin successfully shattered the ‘video game adaptation curse’, attracting not just fans of the game but also captivating mainstream audiences.
Whilst working on the eagerly-awaited second season of The Last of Us, Mazin also found time to contribute to Denis Villeneuve‘s highly anticipated ‘Dune: Part Two’. Thanks to WGA’s new policy, he will be credited for his work on the sequel.
During a recent interview on Josh Horowitz‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Mazin discussed his transition away from film projects towards more individualised work. Having gained recognition with Netflix‘s Chernobyl and earlier contributions to several comedy films, he declared his focus on partnerships with directors he admired, such as Villeneuve.
Mazin stated, “I’ll work with certain directors when they call because I love them and because they’re so brilliant, so if, like, Denis Villeneuve calls, then absolutely.”
When asked about his involvement with Dune 2, Mazin confirmed, “I am a participating writer in “Dune: Part Two”. I came in and did a little bit of work.” Thanks to recent changes in Writers Guild of America policy, such additional writing work is now recognized with an ‘Additional Literary Material’ credit, which Mazin holds for the upcoming feature.
Mazin’s influence on the upcoming Timothée Chalamet-led feature promises to be intriguing. Meanwhile, production for the second season of The Last of Us remains on hold due to the ongoing WGA strike. Updates on both projects will be keenly anticipated.
